observation code question

If I admit a pt to the hospital in the evening for obersation,(I don't see, but I give verbal orders), and then I see the patient the next day and decide to discharge him , what is the appropriate obersation code? Assume I admit via phone at 7pm and discharge at 1pm the following afternoon.

re: observation code question

But I that that was only for for initial admit code. Since discharge is on a different day, shouldn't it be 99217?

There is a great CPT® Assistant article that explains in great detail the use of these codes and when and how they should be utilized.
