auto accident

Pt came in for auto accident office visit, but pt does not have any information about her auto insurance and told us to bill her medical ins. Is that right to bill medical ins as primayr? I am sure Auto Ins is always primary or depending on their ins clause. Help!

Our office has never had the practice of filing with a 3rd party such as an auto insurance. We have always billed the patient's health insurance and let the insurance company duke it out with the auto insurance.

My practice does not get involved with third party liability. Typically, the medical insurer will request a determination from the auto carrier before they consider the claim. If the service has been rendered at this point you need to ask your patient for the auto info, file that first for payment or denial then proceed to the medical carrier. Going forward, you may want to avoid third party all together, it can be a never ending maze. Best wishes.

My Physician does a lot of MVA's. You can bill the patients insurance, but it usually comes back stating that it is a 3rd party and they are not responsible. It's really a waste of time, unless the patients MVA carrier and the commercial insurance are in subrogation. I would call the patient and get the MVA carrier information and go forward with that. Also, ask the patient if they are retaining an attorney. If they have, send the MVA carrier and the Attorney the claim. I file liens and that assures that your doctor will get paid. It can take from 3 months to 18 months to get these paid. If your doctor does not do alot of these, I would not take them on, it sits on the books for quite a long time. also, you can tell the patient you only take cash for MVA. They can recoup the money from insurance and that will save you time and effort.
