Lab question

Fetal Fibronectin – lab test (82731) to determine if in preterm labor. Is collecting the sample a billable activity, maybe like a venipuncture in a way.

Thanks

venipuncture

Varies with payer. Example Anthem states, "The drawing fee is incorporated into the lab procedure; therefore, the physician will not be reimbursed for an additional drawing fee". But, goes on to say: "A charge related to drawing of blood performed by an OB/GYN is payable as a separate charge and isn’t included in the total obstetrical allowance".
Medicare states: Medicare and many other payers allow a separate specimen collection charge for drawing or collecting specimens by venipuncture or catheterization whether the specimen is processed on site or referred to another laboratory for analysis. (Check CCI edits as well}
Medicaid would be by State policy. Many bundle into Lab code
BC/BS of NC: Effective for claims processed on or after 01/01/07, FEP will not be paying a separate allowance for a venipuncture charge when billed with medical or surgical care on the same claim for preferred or participating providers. The venipuncture charge will be bundled with the medical or surgical care for payment. Please note the charges are not billable to members for preferred or participating providers.

So, it depends!
