Inpatient consult

Our physician was called in to do a consult on a patient that had already been admitted. I will be billing Oregon Medicaid and they do not allow consult codes. What code(s) would I use?

re: Inpatient consult

Can I bill the admit code (99221-99223) if the patient had already been admitted by another physician?

re: Inpatient consult

The Hospitalist that did the initial visit submits their code (same as yours) with a specific modifier that indicates they are the primary on the case (sort of like a PCP). Any specialist that is called in after will use the same codes, but without the special modifier.

The admitting physician will use the modifier "AI" tolet insurances know that he/she was the admitting physician.
