Doctor scheduled for 1 hour deposition on a clinic trauma patient
One of my the Doctors was scheduled to do a 1 hour deposition on a clinic trauma patient today with the attorney for the defense, with a 30 min preliminary meeting with the plaintiff's (patient's) attorney.
It was cancelled at the last minute, leaving an open gap in his appointment schedule.
Our organizations policy is to bill the attorneys for the lost time, unless notice were given 48 hours in advance, $600 to one attorney, and $300 for the other. This is standard in the medical community to hopefully avoid this kind of wasted valuable time.
So how would this be billed? What codes are used? And for that matter, what is the CPT® code for a deposition? And for a legal meeting? Please advise.
Thank you.
re: Doctor scheduled for 1 hour deposition on a clinic trauma patient
In cases like this we bill 99199, the description for this CPT® is "Unlisted special service, procedure or report." You can add "90 minute deposition and preliminary meeting" as the line-item description. The lawyers should already be anticipating your bill so I doubt further clarification is required.
