ICD-10 Bacterial septic arthritis, right knee code M00.861
The Tabular section: Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue. M00-section
Notes in this section reference in red print in my tabular to use an additional code (B96) to identify bacteria.
The diagnosis is: "Bacterial septic arthritis, right knee"
Shouldn't a secondary code be used inaddition to M00.861 + (B96.89) ?
I coded it adding the (B96) coded, but am in doubt.
The estiology of septic arthritis is bacterial.
What do you think?
Thanks
Tim

Whenever you see "in diseases classified elsewhere" in a code descriptor, you must first code the underlying disease (ex, Moo.861). This can then be followed with B96.- code.

Thanks, I now feel better having following the instructions in the M008. section noting to add codes from the B96 tabular section.
