Tumor excision with closure

My physician has performed a tumor removal with an intermediate closure using code 21013. I noticed that he did perform a closure but did not code for it. I did some research and found mixed information but per the CPT® book I would believe that he should be able to bill for both the excision and the closure. I understand that a simple closure would be included in most excisions but this is an intermediate closure. Question is can a intermediate or complex closure be billed and paid and in conjunction with procedure 21013? Thanks!!

re: Tumor excision with closure

21013 includes simple or intermediate closures. A complex closure is the only one that should be reported separately.

Can you refer me to any documentation in regards to this? I have been researching this for days and I continue to get conflicting information-- even this website has an article -Coding Excisions and Wound Repairs written by Allison Singer and she states an intermediate closure and complex closure should be billed separately with procedure 21013. I would like something solid. Any reference information would be appreciated. Thanks.

re: Tumor excision with closure

The information in regards to the simple and intermediate closures being included with the excision of a subcutaneous soft tissue tumor is located in the very beginning of the Musculoskeletal / Surgery portion of the CPT® book-
