Place of service inpt status when evaluated in ER

Medicare patient seen in the ER by the family doc admitted to inpatient status from the ER. Palmetto states an inpatient admission code is to be billed but is not clear as to the place of service required. The family docs H & P and admit notes are in the ER record. Is the place of service hospital, to be consistent with the inpatient status, or ER POS 23 as the service was actually provided in the ER? (As signaturedoc noted, we are just waiting for all the rejections to docs based on wrong POS -- especially in light of the newer POS options, including home, hotel, etc.)

Inpatient

If admitted by family doc., the POS is inpatient. All services in an outpatient status related to admission same day/same physician, are bundled to the inpatient admission code (99221-99223)
