CPT® 59851

I am billing this code with POS 11 (outpatient, office). one insurance company occasionally rejects this saying invalid POS. I cannot find that this is strictly a hospital code and no one else rejects it as such. any help on this?

re: CPT® 59851

Since this is an induced abortion w/a D&C or evcuation I can't imagine that you would be performing this in the office. This procedure is usually done as an outpatient procedure in an outpatient hospital facility and the POS would be 22-outpatient hospital. If insurance companies are paying you on this w/POS as 11, it must be because someone is not paying attention to the POS. I work for an OB-GYN practice and this would never be done as a office procedure. If you look in the CPT® book for the description of the code it will give you a better understanding of what this procedure details. :)

re: CPT® 59851

btw, I also wanted to say that if your provider is using an ambulatory surgical center you should be using POS of 24. All the POS can be found in the beginining of the CPT® book, when you open the inside flap, their located on the first page. hope this helps:)
