lab code for pap smear

What diagnosis code should we be putting on the lab slip for a pap smear? I was told to use V76.47 but isn't this code only for a patient without a cervix? If the patient has a cervix, do I use V76.2?

You are correct

V76.47 is used when the specimen is vaginal and post hysterectomy. Normally if the source is cervical or endocervical you would utilize codes V76.2 and/or V72.31. If you are recieving V76.47 from the physician's office you may want to call and verify validity. Our physician's offices often get confused and plug in the wrong code.

I hope this helps.
