Expired patients

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a new collection policy and would like some help please.

1-What is the procedure for expired patients with a blance due that dont have insurance? do you send them to collection? write off?

2- Patients with/without ins that have a credit balance?

I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thank you

In some instances, I have worked for practices in which the physician decided to write the balance off as uncollectable. I have also worked for practices who once notified the patient has expired, the patient's estate was billed.

In the event of a credit balance, the over paying party whether it is patient or insurance needs to be refunded in accordance with your provider contract. If a refund is due to a patient, you may want to familiarize yourself with your state laws as some states mandate the time frame in which a patient/consumer must be refunded.

Best Wishes in developong your policy.
