modifier use

Pt came in on May 20th for skin biopsy. A week later, pt came back & doc did a wider excision. Do I need a modifier or just bill for the excision code? Thanks!

Let me tell you how to answer this question.

Go to the CMS website and check on the global days for the service.

http://www.cms.gov/apps/physician-fee-schedule/search/search-criteria.aspx

Look and see how many global days the procedure you've performed has.

If 0, then no modifier is needed.
If 10 or 90, and it is a staged or related procedure, use modifier 58.
