Inpatient psychiatry coding

My psychiatrist was called in on a case to see a patient who had already been admitted to the medical floor of our hospital. After 2 hours of evaluation, the patient was admitted to the psych unit of the hospital and prescribed medication.
To code this correctly, do I want to use 90822 individual psychotherapy w/medical evaluation and management services along with 99356 for prolonged services, and if so do I need a modifier?

That depends, what was done? If a complete diagnostic evaluation was performed, you may have 90801. This is a comprehensive service and time intensive.

And you can't use prolonged services codes on the psych codes. If you look in the CPT book, you'll see the codes which can have prolonged services used with them. No other codes but those listed can be submitted with prolonged services.

Also, look at:

for prolonged services.

You can use the prolonged codes with 90822- it is specifically listed under 99356 to be coded first
