rvu

we are paid on rvu system...if someone is doing a bilateral procedure is it standard to pay the rvu full amount for the CPT® (procedure) for each side or is it standard to pay 1/2 rvu for 2nd side...i understand that the organization gets paid less for second side but it gets a significant total amount for overhead etc,,,if anyone could comment on this topic that would be great,,,,thanks james

Bilateral procedures, unless the code descriptor includes bilateral, are generally paid full allowed for 1 side, 1/2 for opposite side. If this is a private payer, you will need to review the contract to determine the payment agreement. If not in contract, contact payer for clarification.
