Coding

I am one of two coders here at our practice and we have a girl that had a lapse in dues for her CPC due to moving and not updating her address. Anyway, she is currently studying to re-take the test to be a current CPC again. My question is, can we have her auditing notes and assigning codes if she isn't currently an active CPC? What are the rules/regulations if any regarding this?

Coding credentials

There are no requirements for certified coders, so your staff member can assign codes. It is the practice's responsibility to make sure that the coding is accurate, whether performed by the physician, a nurse, a coder, a biller, etc.

But, there are no licensure or credentialing requirements.
