Inpatient consultations

Hi, I do billing for doctors in a teaching facility. My question is if the resident see's a patient on one day and the MD see's the patient on the next day, can the MD use that resident's note to bill an Inpatient consultation? It is my understanding that the date of service have to be the same.

consultation

This happens all the time at teaching hospitals. When I see the patient the following day, I perform my own H&P or consult. I dictate my own note and bill the consult on the date I saw the patient, regardless of when the patient was admitted or seen by the resident. My understanding is that the day the resident saw the patient can't be billed as the consult day because the attending (billing) physician was not actually present. I will occasionally cheat (don't tell anyone) and use the resident gathered info to compile my note...If this doesn't help, ask again.
