Medical record documentation

How long should a medical provider be allowed to complete medical record documentation if they are leaving the practice?

Medicare doesn't give a time limit for office services. They say the documentation should be complete as soon after the service as is practical.

If this is an employed physician, hopefully your organization has standards about medical record completion that are relevant to all physicians, staying or leaving. Typically, records should be completed in 72 hours. There are times that a physician may have an emergency, be called away, the weekend intervenes, but most would say not more than a week.

Do you have a written policy: no last paycheck until complete? If not, maybe that's a good idea. It won't help you today, but maybe for a future time.

Thank you for the response. I am in the process of re-writing our policies/procedures and just wanted to make sure I was going in the right direction.
