Deleted Consultation Codes 99241-99245

Hello,

Would someone please explain the difference between 99215 and 99245.

And have the group of codes below been deleted?

99241
99242
99243
99244
99245

Thanks for your help!

re: Deleted Consultation Codes 99241-99245

99241-99245 are when a Specialist consult with PCP, seeing the patient at the PCP's request. Medicare and most commercial do not accept consult codes. Consults are only used when the patient is NEW, therefor 9920X (appropriate level) would be used. 99211-99215 are used for established patients. Hope that helps!

You should get out your CPT® book. You'll see that the consult codes are still there. Medicare no longer recognizes consult codes.

Read the front section about new and established patients. The blue section. Read the editorial comments near consults. I call it "hidden in plain sight."

Then, search this site for "category of code" and download the chart you find there.
