smoking cessation
We are a surgical office and are checking into the smoking cessation codes. I have found 99406, 99407, and G0436, G0437 should be used for the asymptomatic patient. Supporting documentation should include total time spent and what was discussed, including cessation techniques, resources and follow-up. As a surgical office, are we okay to use these codes? The primary care would be the one managing this, not the surgeon, so does that make a difference?
Thank you.
re: smoking cessation
If your surgeon provides the service above and beyond the E/M visit, document the time and content and bill them. The surgeon certainly wants the patient to be a non-smoker before surgery.
