Ecode

This may be a silly question but since I am so new to coding. Whay do I do when an ER physician dx a pt with a ankle sprain and states that it is not from an injury. Our system still wants an E code so what would I do in this situation. Thanks for any help received.

re: Ecode

That's a bit perplexing! A sprain IS the result of an injury, per definition. I would consult the physician for further clarification. If that doesn't get the result you are looking for, and since a sprain is the result of an injury, I would use 845.00 & E030.

Good luck!

re: Ecode

The sprain could be caused by osteoporosis, therefore not an injury code.
