The E/M code: Carriers pay for an E/M service provided on the day of a procedure with a global fee period if the physician indicates that the service is for a significant, separately identifiable E/M service that is above and beyond the usual pre- and post-operative work of the procedure. a. Billing for a visit would not be appropriate if
the physician only identified the need for sutures and confirmed allergy and immunization status. In the circumstance when the decision to perform a minor procedure is typically done immediately before the service (e.g., whether or not sutures are needed to close a wound, whether or not to remove a mole or wart, etc.), it is considered a routine preoperative service and a visit or consultation should not be reported in addition to the procedure.
