Hospital billing with post-op

A specialist is consulted by a physician for a patient. He (the specialist) perform's a surgery, and does the follow up visits. The surgery has a 90 day global period. Can the specialist bill for the hospital visits after the surgery in the post-op period since the patient is still in the hospital?

No, as soon as the surgery is performed, the 90 day global kicks in. If the patient has a different issue going on and is seen by the specialist, you can bill those services using a modifier.

If the specialist does a procedure, then any follow-up visits by the specialist for that case are considered post-op care. If the specialist sees the patient for a different reason, then he can bill those visits with a modifier.
