diabetic training

One of our physicians had his nurse give basic diabetic education to a newly diagnosed diabetic patient. We billed Medicare 97802 - Preventative Counseling - which Medicare denied. What should we have billed? The patient was angry at having to pay out of pocket for this service that he felt Medicare should have paid.

If it's the nurse...

then it's a 99211. If the doc does it, then use time-based E&M

Diabetic education

For diabetic education there is a HCPCS code. G0108-there are no physician work RVU's. You might want to look into it and see if your diabetic program qualifies. If this was just a one time visit and not a certified dietician or certified diabetic educator then I think you are stuck with the E&M codes.
