ER consultation
Patient was seen in the ER (not admitted); my physician was called in to do an ER consolation. Would it be appropriate to bill a regular E/M code (i.e. 99214) for a consolation? This is a Medicaid patient (Medicare/Medicaid no longer accepts consultation code). If so, is the POS of 22 okay to attached tot he OV (I normally use POS 20 or 11 for those types of CPT® code).
re: ER consultation
You can still bill consultations codes to Medicaid. I would bill the appropriate outpatient CPT® code (99241-99245).
re: ER consultation
Thanks for your reply and figuring out what I was talking about "consolation" (LOL). Automatic spell check can be dangerous.
Does Medicare allow consultation codes in a hospital setting? If not, what E/M code should be bill for an ER consultation?
re: ER consultation
I knew what you were talking about :)
Medicare does not allow consultation CPT® codes at all. For inpatient status, you need to look at admit codes (99221-99223) and for outpatient status, you need to then go to new/established patient codes (99201-99205, 99212-99215). Hope this helps you.
