Hospital discharge

My provider billed a hospital discharge, but the patient did not leave the hospital until the next day due to transportation issues. The patient was not seen by the provider on the day they left the hospital. The provider wants the discharge on the date the patient was seen, but I've been told that it should be billed on the day the patient actually left the hospital. Please advise.

Bill the service on the date it was performed and documented, if the day before, bill DOS for the day before.
