Chemo Administration

Two chemo drugs to be administered. The first was to be given IV over 30 min but was stopped due to reaction. MD checked pt, then continued with the second drug given by push. How would you code the infusion that was stopped? Thanks.

Interesting question. How long was the first drug running before the reaction? The CPT® language for 96413 is "up to 1 hr...initial substance or drug"

re: Chemo Administration

Try billing the continuous administration code with modifier 53 for discontinued services.
Under certain circumstances, the physician or other qualified health care professional may elect to terminate a surgical or diagnostic procedure. Due to extenuating circumstances or those that threaten the well being of the patient, it may be necessary to indicate that a surgical or diagnostic procedure was started but discontinued. This circumstance may be reported by adding modifier 53 to the code reported by the individual for the discontinued procedure.

Infusion vs. Push:
An intravenous or intra-arterial push is defined as:
An injection in which the health care professional who administers the substance or
drug is continuously present to administer the injection and observe the patient; OR
An infusion of 15 minutes or less.
I would code as an IV push (96409), 1st drug; followed by 96411 (if chemo drug) for subsequent administration. If the subsequent drug pushed is non-chemo, use 96375
