Patient comes in with pain in clavicle - Dx with muscle strain - with no history of trauma or injury. What ecode is the insurance company wanting?

Could it be a late effect of an injury or look at E927-E929.

"E" codes are descriptors for the circumstance/cause of the injury. They are used as secondary codes after a primary from the tabular list. The ICD-9 code for sprian/strain shoulder (area) is 840.9, which you could follow up with an E-code to describe how the injury occurred.
