re: Inpt consults performed by PA

Shared visits are evaluation and management (E/M) services provided to inpatients in a hospital or outpatients in the emergency department. These services are literally “shared” between MD and an NPP. If both have a face-to-face encounter with the patient, the service can be billed under MD provider number and is reimbursed at 100 percent of the physician fee schedule. But, (Medicare) Services previously billed as consultation services now fall under the guidelines of all other E/M services. Therefore, if the services were shared/split between the physician and NPP, both would have to document the services they provided and both would have to sign their documentation.
