Per CPT manual: Medical genetic counseling services; each 30 minutes face to face with patient/family.

When the family member visits without the presence of the patient, the codes below appear to reflect this service. Reason for visit can be billed as primary code: i.e. 174.9 with additional code below to reflect consulting party.

V65.1 Person consulting on behalf of another person (advice or treatment for non attending third party). Exclusions in ICD-9

V61.49 Other: (concern about increased risk cancer or other genetic condition) of sick or handicapped person in family or household.

Are these appropriate codes to indicate consulting party without patient, and should these be used as secondary or primary codes?
