Medicare consults.. Please please please help!!!

Medicare keeps denying our hospital consults. I know that they do not pay consults but if a patient is seen in the hospital what code can we use.. I charged a 99222 and it was denied for place of service. I had a pos of 22. Also this is for arizona... Please let me know.. I am getting killed on these..

Place of service 22 is outpatient, and you are billing an inpatient consult. Use POS 21 for inpatient status.

Download the pdf that accompanies the article "category of code" on Codapedia.

99222 cant be billed with pos of 22, that is probably why you are getting denials...If the patient is in observation, pos of 22, if new pt to physician 99201-99205, or established to physician 99212-99215....99222 is billed with pos of 21.

If the patient was inpatient, your POS should be 21. Get your denials together and call the corrections in via Clerical Error Reopening and you will get quick resolve.
