credentialing

Yesterday a representative from Medicare called requesting to speak with the new doc we sent in paper work for credentialing. Our physicians are hospital based and very difficult to reach. The rep stated that she needed to speak to her before she could be assigned a number. Is this something new? Are they making phone calls on all new applications? jbrooks
