Margins w/ Lipoma excisions

A patient comes in for removal of multiple lipomas. I cannot figure out if the incision made is the margins. Example: "incision made proximal to lateral, approx., 2 cm of a 4 cm lipoma of the hip." Is the 2 cm considered the marginal area. Where i would calculate the total area excised to be 6 cm. Or would I just calculate it to be 4 cm.
