EOB retention

Since EOB's aren't considered part of a patient's medical record, what is the requirement for retaining them. All of ours are in paper format and starting to take up room. I usually keep on hand the prior year and older than that go into storage, but wondering if they could be shredded. Have tried to find standards for retention of EOBs but haven't been successful. Thought some in this group would know.

Last I heard, the rule is 7 years, but you are not required to keep them in paper form if you have them archived electronically.
