ICD-10 question

As the coding fraternity is buzzing with ICD-10, here I got a question popped in my mind suddenly:

What will happen once ICD-10 is implemented on 1st Oct., 2013? What about the charts that will come still after that date, but with DOS till Sept. 30, 2013? Would those be coded with ICD-9? Even, for auditing / re-coding / denial management etc. for the charts with DOS prior to 1st Oct., 2013, would ICD-9 codes will be used (since the charts had been coded with ICD-9 codes only)?

If that's the case, then are the physician offices and facilities required to keep both the ICD-9 and ICD-10 (books / softwares whatever) handy with them?

Not getting a satisfactory answer for this. Explanations are very much welcome!

re: ICD-10 question

You will be using both code sets based on date of service. If before October 1, use I-9. If on or after Oct 1, 2013, use ICD-10 codes.
