Diabetic ICD 9 Coding

I have a question that was brought to me by one of my providers.

I would like to know when you have a diabetic patient and there are many ICD 9 diabetic codes. Do you code each and everyone that applies to the patient or do you code to the highest level?

You would code each condition that applies to the highest level (which is the 5th digit). Use any additional codes that identify the manifestations.
