pre-visit E&M work

Can anyone give me guidance aout incorporating work you do brefore (and after) a visit within the MDM component? I often have complex cases that require literature searches and discussion with various experts. I call pts to get further detail. I ask pts to call me to let me know how they are doing between visits. Would this pre-work count to increase my MDM?

All E/M services are face-face with physician. Pre-work is part of general patient care.
