What is the Correct way to Code a Flu Vaccination

What is the Correct way to code the Flu Vaccine for these situations.

1. Medicare patient who come for only flu vaccination.

2. Medicare who come for something else and request flu vaccination.

3. BCBS patient who comes for only the flu vaccination.

4. BCBS patient who comes for something else and requests the flu vaccination.

I am using the FluLaval (CPT 90658 NDC 19515-0887-07) from GSK.)

ICD 9: V04.8 Need for Influenza Vaccination

HPCS: G0008 - Admin of Influenza Vaccine

What is exactly is the difference in using the G code versus using the CPT code in this situation.

Sincerely,

RKS

Flu vaccine

Medicare has established HCPCS codes, (the G code) for when you give a Medicare patient a flu vaccine. For all other patients, use the CPT code, 90471. And if you have purchased the vaccine (as opposed to receiving it for free from the state) then bill for the vaccine itself.

There is a great article by Allison Singer on Codapedia:

It would be incorrect to code a nurse visit when the patient presents only for the flu shot.
