biopsies

I have always been instructed that when a biopsy is taken (11100 and 11101) that it is best to wait until the path report is back to code to the highest specificity. We have a couple of providers that believe that the 238.2 should be billed with the biopsy code as they did not know what the biospy was when it was taken. I would appreciate your thoughts and any information you have on this. Thank you

That is my understanding as well - wait until the path report is back before assigning a Dx.

bx dx and path report

I have always waited for the path report. If it turns out malignant and the lesion was excised, you can bill a higher RVU code and get better reimbursement. I agree with you.
