E/M provided by the Resident
Hi,
Could you please let me know if a resident can bill for an E/M service. The teaching physician can bill for the E/M service but can the resident bill for it too? I guess not, but i do need some confirmation.
Thanks in advance
re: E/M provided by the Resident
No, a resident service is not billable to Medicare. Their services are paid to the hospital under the GME program.
The teaching physician uses either modifier GC or GE (per criteria), on the E/M service code, when supervising residents.
(For insurers other than Medicare, physicians should check with local payers to find out their rules for teaching environments.)
