NPI still needed for referring doc

My docs are specialty docs, normally are consulted by admit doc. Now that we are using new codes (no longer consult codes for Medicare) do we still need to report the NPI of the doctor that is asking us to see the pt. in hospital when billing Medicare?

But I don't think the claim will be denied without it. It's not a consult anymore.
