CT guided FNA of left lung - Pathology

Procedure: performed three CT guided fine needle aspirations of left lung lesion. The aspiration material was divided for direct pap smears and cell block studies. An immediate assessment of cellularity was performed using the Diff-Quik stain, and the results were discussed with Dr. X at the time of the procedure...

Microscopic findings: six direct smears and cell block material are examined. The aspiration material is excellent and contains numerous cytologically malignant epithelial cells that are present in large architecturally disordered sheets. The tumor cells have large, pleomorphic nuclei with a moderate amount of cytoplasm. No overt glandular differentiation is identified. A small cell component is not seen.
