Athletic Trainer

Good Morning,
Is an athletic trainer able to give injections that the MD ordered and is this considered Incident To? For example, patient comes in for a series of injections (synvisc), and athletic trainer documents a brief exam and then the injection.
Thank you!

re: Athletic Trainer

I think it depends on what your state determines as their scope of practice.
Unless the athletic trainer is credentialed and given a Medicare provider number (along the same lines as an NP or PA), Incident To billing couln't apply. All services would have to be documented and billed by the physician.

At first I thought you meant IM injections, and of course a staff member may give IM injections under the general supervision of a physician.

But, I agree withe the previous poster about an injection into the joint: out of the scope of practice of an athletic trainer.
