medical necessity for labs drawn prior to an annual follow up visit
some patients have asked us to have their routine labs drawn prior to their annual visit so that they can discuss the results with their physician during the visit, instead of getting a phone call or letter later. I have been warned that this is a problem, especially for Medicare patients, because medical necessity is not established. For patients with chronic dx, (such as DM, hyperlipidemia and hypothyroidism) who require routine labs, is it acceptable to draw these labs prior to a scheduled visit?
