vessel loops

The surgeon performs a laparotomy to access the internal and external iliac arteries. Patient has traumatic amputation of the lower extremeties. "Temporary control with vessel loops of both internal and external iliac arteries on right side to assist ortho-guys with control of bleeding right leg". The vessel loops are then removed and (abdomen) closed in layers. How would this be coded?

Cannot say without op-note. Control of bleeding is part of any surgical procedure.

re: vessel loops

This is a traumatic amputation case in which control of hemorrhage is performed higher up on the body. In this case the lower extremeties have been amputated by injury and control of hemorrhage is done on the iliac arteries within the abdomen while the orthopedics work on the amputations. A vessel loop is used to control blood flow on the iliacs and then removed once the orthopedics have completed work on the leg remnants. The laparotomy is then closed up. I was thinking in this case because control of blood flow is being done in a different area than the amputations that this would require a icd 9 procedure code for this inpatient.
