re: when will icd 10 be mandatory?
ICD-10 Deadline Update
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a press release announcing a proposed rule that would delay the compliance date for ICD-10 from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014. The comment period is now closed. Public comments are being reviewed and analyzed, and the Department will issue a final rule as expeditiously as possible.

Do you remember that New Yorker cartoon of a guy on the phone looking at his date book? (all right, it's an old cartoon, he still has a date book) The caption is "How about never, is never good for you?"
I think we can count on Oct 1 2015 unless Congress succumbs to pressure.

Given the rest of the world is already using ICD10 - and moving soon to ICD11 - the USA is STILL behind everyone else!

But, remember the "rest of the world" is using an ICD-10 version of 16,000 codes. Our version, the clinical modification set, has 68,000 codes.
And, the rest of the world doesn't use it for claims. The rest of the world uses it for morbidity and mortality data.
