Reading of Scans

I have a coding question: We are an oncology practice that also employs radiologist to supervise and interpret our PET and CT scans. Our patients will on numerous occasions bring scans from other providers which our physicians will want to have our radiologist review. Can we charge for this? Code 76140 for consultation on X-ray, made elsewhere, written report. This is a covered code by everyone except Medicare. If we use this code can we bill it times the number of scans reviewed? (CT, Neck, Chest, Abdomen, Pelvis) Or is there another code that would better suit the services rendered.

Thanks.

Re: Reading of scans

From what I understand this code is almost like a consult, first doc asks second doc for his opinion on an xray/scan, second doc reads and sends formal written report to first doc. Also, most insurances will only cover one read per xray...You say it is a covered code...have you spoken with them or is this from experience?

You say the physicians are having the radiologist "review". Because they are employed by the company it makes me think this is just a "hey, what do you think of this" kinda thing versus a formal "consultation".

My opinion only. I do not use this code, and do not have any concrete sources for you. Hopefully someone will have something more solid for you.

Does this happen often? Are your physicians just not happy with the reports they are getting?
