99223

Can only the admitting physician use 99223? Or can the consult Dr. use? I know Medicare uses but they have AI mod. I want to use with commerical insurance for consult visits that have Medicare as secondary.

Anyone can use it

but if the patient has commercial primary insurance, then bill a consult code and rebill Medicare as secondary with the appropriate new patient code.

Consult in hospital Medicare as secondary payer

I agree with signature doc:

If patient has Medicare as the secondary payer, and it is a consult, use 99251--99255 and bill to patient's commercial primary. When it rejects, resubmit with the appropriate code: use the initial hospital services codes if it meets the documentation requirements, if not, use the subsequent hospital visits.
Remember, these codes don't have new or established patient designations.

I'm afraid the commercials will reject 99221-99223 for consults on MSP patients as duplicates.
