Coding Positions

Hi All, I am a recent graduate from the Medical coding certificate in WI, what I am wondering is, if I should conitune to the HIT program or try to take the CPC and get a job that way without any experience. Most people I have talked to have said that they would hire a HIT over a Certificate but I am just trying to confirm what I have heard and it has been really hard trying to get a foot in the door somplace.

re: Coding Positions

You really need to decide the direction you want to pursue. If you are looking to go into the hospital arena of coding/billing, it is important to understand that it is likely you will be expected to handle high volumes of work with productivity & accuracy attached to maintaining the position. You should expect to be able to handle inpatient coding at least when needed. Most hospital coding managers look for an AHIMA credentialed candidate. Hospital billing is done on the UB-04. If they are also billing for employed physicians, the biller is usually expected to handle both UB & 1500. The HIT program is likely your best avenue if this is your target.

All physicians do not employ credentialed coders. Also, if the physician group is purchased by a hospital, there may not be transition opportunities for the staff unless you have at least basic knowledge of the hospital world. While there is not a one size fits all, you should consider all factors when making your decision.
