NEw Biller

HI All,
I am new to the billing world, just got my Certificate in Billing and really could use some experience. I have been going from dr to dr trying to promote my business and even went for an internship but because i was no longer a student he would not bring me on..if there is anyone out there that needs any remote help. Please let me know...or has any tips for me i would really appreciate it. Thanks so much.

There’s a looottt to learn. It’s not something you can learn in one class, one session, or even one year. Carrier’s change their rules/policies every year. You have Medicare guidelines to learn, which would be a plus; modifiers, LCDs, HIPAA, OIG, and on and on. Then you have the ICD-10’s coming up soon.

The first step is deciding which field you will want to get into. You may want to get your foot in the door somewhere first, even if it’s not the actual job you want, just to see how a medical office runs. You’ll need to learn everything from the front end to the back end in order to truly understand how things work, how to fix whatever comes up and how each person can affect the reimbursement.

Medical billing curtails more than just sending claims to the carrier’s. To stay in this field, you have to continually learn new things, new changes/updates, new guidelines, it’s truly never ending. But for myself, I love a challenge and I love learning so it fits me. It is very rewarding once you get to a certain point and begin to truly understand how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. I started out at the front desk and moved my way through the ranks and have been doing billing for over 15 yrs now. I find it challenging, frustrating, stressful at times but at the same time very rewarding, exciting and what a great feeling of accomplishment when you are told what a great job you’ve done.

So if it’s something you truly want to do, hang in there, keep learning everything you can, visit the different forums, carrier sites and hang on to that determination, even when you hit a bump or two every now and then. Good luck!

Thanks Debra S for your reply. Yes it seems all i do thesed days are read..which is fine with me because i am like you and love the challenge on keeping up with things. And i am a 'researcher and a problem solver so this business is perfect for me.. I just wish someone would give me the opportunity to show them i can do this! I am not a quitter so i will still be out there every day until i am at the "right place at the Right time" Until then like you said i will be visiting many websites and forums to keep up with it all, And i am already keeping up to date with the ICD 10 .So thanks and keep up the good work !!!
