Speech Generating Devise (CPT® and authorizatin)

Does anyone have any advice on obatining an authorization for a Speech Generating Device (SGD) for an autistic pediatric patient? He has severe/profound expressive language delay as a result from Autism. His speech therapist is requesting this device and we are his PCP.

I do not have a CPT® code for such a device. Anyone know of one? It would be for a purchase.

I am not certain what the applicable/medical necessity diagnosis is for such a device.

Thank you.

I believe it would be a HCPCS code, not a CPT®. Did you google this by any chance? Seems his speech therapist should have this kind of information readily available to them. Good luck.

Per what I was able to google the HCPC's code you should be using is either E2508 or E2510, please google them or look them up in the HCPC's book. As for a DX, looke in the code ranges of 315.xx and pick which one best suits the patients needs. I would also use the 299.00 code for a secondary code to show the patients disabilites are due to Autism. as for getting authorzation, you need to contact the patient's insurance company and give them the HCPC code you are going to use along w/the correct DX. good luck:)
